The Sand Dollar, also known as the Caribbean Dollar or the Mermaid Dollar, is sometimes released by the waves on the beaches of Las Terrenas, and has been with us since 1992.
It is a flat sea urchin that belongs to the clypeasteroïda family.

A beautiful legend comes with it:
The sand dollar sums up the story of Poseidon, the god of the sea, and the Amphitrite, goddess of the sea. With its five openings, the sand dollar symbolizes the five oceans - Atlantic, Southern, Pacific, Arctic and Indian - protected by Poseidon. The center of the shell represents the north star, which led the Amphitrite to Poseidon, while the back of the shell is adorned with a starfish outline, symbolizing all marine creatures equally loved by the god and goddess. If you break the shell, you will release five birds sent by Poseidon to watch over the sea. According to the legend, sand dollars are either the mythical currency lost by mermaids during their travels and brought back by the waves on the beach, or the currency of the lost city of Atlantis.
